Voltage regulator Leroy Somer model R448

AVR R448 automatic voltage regulator circuit provides closed-loop control of the alternator output voltage by adjusting the excitation field current. The primary winding has a voltage relative to the alternator (shunt characteristic), the next winding has a voltage proportional to the stator current (combined characteristic: booster effect) fed by two auxiliary windings that are independent of the equal voltage circuit.

The power supply voltage is rectified and filtered by the AVR monitoring transistor before use. With PMG excitation, a permanent magnet generator (PMG) added to the alternator supplies the AVR voltage without the main alternator winding. It is built into the back of the device and is connected to the AVR R448.
